India’s First 2025 Consular Camp in Canada Runs Smoothly Amid Protest Curbs

The first Indian consular camp of the year in Canada took place smoothly at the Khalsa Diwan Society gurdwara in Abbotsford, British Columbia. This happened despite nearby protests by pro-Khalistan groups because a court had ordered them to stay at least 50 meters away from the camp.

The camp provided services like passport renewals, OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cards, and document attestation. Officials from the Indian Consulate in Vancouver attended the event.

In the past, similar camps in Canada were disrupted by protestors, including one incident in Brampton and attacks on Hindu temples that hosted such camps. To prevent such problems, other gurdwaras in Vancouver and the Lakshmi Narayan Mandir in Toronto also got court orders to keep protestors at a safe distance.

These events take place against the backdrop of strained India-Canada relations. Tensions grew after the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, with both countries expelling six diplomats each in October 2024.
