Dangerous ‘Rex Block’ Weather System Puts Alberta on Alert

A rare weather pattern known as a “Rex Block” is developing over Alberta, Canada, bringing the threat of heavy rain, strong winds, and unusually cold weather to southern parts of the province this weekend.

A Rex Block happens when a high-pressure system stays directly above a low-pressure system, preventing the weather from moving. As a result, rain and stormy conditions can remain over the same area for several days.

Weather experts say Calgary and southern Alberta are likely to be the hardest hit on Sunday and Monday. Forecasts predict 20 to 50 millimetres of rain along with strong northwesterly winds of 50 to 70 km/h. Calgary is also under a severe thunderstorm watch.

Meteorologists warn that the exact amount of rainfall is still uncertain. Even a small change in the storm’s path could lead to much higher or lower rainfall totals.

The same weather pattern caused the devastating 2013 Calgary floods, one of Alberta’s worst natural disasters, making officials closely monitor the current situation.

Meanwhile, Edmonton and nearby southeastern areas are under yellow and orange weather alerts. In contrast, northern Alberta is experiencing a severe heatwave, showing how dramatically the Rex Block can affect different parts of the province at the same time.

The weather system is also expected to bring much cooler-than-normal temperatures to southern Alberta through late June and early July.
