New EU Border Systems Mean Extra Steps for Visa-Free Travelers, Including Canadians

European countries are introducing new digital border systems that will soon change how visa-free travelers enter and leave Europe. The goal is to improve border security, track movements more accurately, and make travel smoother in the long run — though it may mean extra steps for travelers before their trips.

The first system, called the Entry/Exit System (EES), will electronically record when non-European visitors enter and exit the European Union, as well as any entry refusals. It will also collect biometric data such as fingerprints and facial images to confirm travelers’ identities and help prevent overstays.

The second system, known as ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), will soon require travelers from visa-exempt countries — including Canada — to apply online for travel authorization before coming to Europe.

An ETIAS approval will be valid for up to three years or until the traveler’s passport expires. Most applications are expected to be processed within minutes, but some may take longer. Certain age groups will be exempt from the requirement.

Officials say these measures will help identify potential security risks before people arrive, although an ETIAS approval does not guarantee entry — passports will still be checked at the border.

Travelers are advised to apply for ETIAS before booking flights or hotels, as the new systems may initially cause delays during the rollout.

Despite the tighter rules, the EU says the long-term aim is to make travel more secure and efficient for everyone.
