Canada Cracks Down on Extortion Gangs Targeting Indian Businesses

Canada has deported three foreign nationals involved in extortion rackets that have led to a rise in shootings against Indian-owned shops and homes. Officials say 78 more people are under investigation for similar crimes.

A special Extortion Task Force in British Columbia — made up of 40 officers from different agencies — is working to stop the violence, which has mainly affected the South Asian community.

The recent wave of attacks includes shootings near Indian neighborhoods and businesses in cities like Brampton, Ontario. One major case involved the murder of businessman Darshan Singh Sasi in Abbotsford, BC, which a gang later claimed responsibility.

Authorities say the networks behind these crimes are linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, along with Goldy Brar and Rohit Godara. Despite the Bishnoi group being labeled a foreign terrorist organization, its members continue to operate across Canada and India.

Officials say deportations and stricter investigations will continue as part of efforts to keep communities safe.
