Jobs Rise, Worries Remain: Canada’s Unemployment Falls to 6.9% in October

Canada’s unemployment rate dropped for the first time in three months, reaching 6.9% in October, down from 7.1% in September, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada.

The country added 67,000 net new jobs in October, showing signs of improvement in the labour market. Most of the new positions came from the wholesale and retail trade (41,000 jobs), transportation and warehousing (30,000), and information, culture, and recreation (25,000) sectors.

However, economists note that the quality of these job gains remains a concern. Part-time work increased by 85,000, while full-time positions declined by 19,000, suggesting that many of the new opportunities may not offer long-term stability.

Youth unemployment fell slightly to 14.1%, but it still remains more than twice the national average.

The construction industry recorded the largest drop, losing around 15,000 jobs in October. Overall, goods-producing industries have declined by 1.3% since January, largely due to U.S. tariffs on lumber and other exports.
