Canada Raises Work Hour Limit for International Students, Plans Stricter Visa Rules for Indians

Canada has announced new changes for international students. From November 8, 2024, students can now work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during regular academic sessions. This is an increase from the previous limit of 20 hours.

Students can also work full-time during scheduled academic breaks (like summer or winter holidays) without needing a separate work permit. Off-campus work refers to jobs outside the student’s college or university, while on-campus work continues to be available for full-time students at their designated institutions.

However, those studying English or French as a second language may not be allowed to work off-campus if their study permit restricts it.

Canada’s open work permit system still allows eligible holders to work for any employer, with some occupation or location restrictions.

Meanwhile, the government plans to tighten visa rules for Indian students due to rising fraud concerns. Authorities may reject more visa applications from India as part of these measures.

In addition, Canada’s 2026–2028 Immigration Levels Plan aims to reduce the number of new international students to about 155,000, which is 49% less than last year’s target.
