Canada Loses Measles-Free Status After Year-Long Outbreak

Canada has officially lost its measles elimination status after the disease continued to spread for more than a year. Since fall 2024, more than 5,000 measles cases have been reported across nine provinces and one territory, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) informed Canada that the country no longer meets the criteria for elimination, as the virus has been spreading continuously for over 12 months. To regain this status, Canada must stop measles transmission for at least another 12 months.

Experts say the outbreak began around October 2024, likely caused by an international traveler, and spread through Ontario and Mennonite communities before reaching other regions.

Health officials link the resurgence to lower vaccination rates and weakened public health systems after COVID-19. Nationally, first-dose coverage dropped from about 90% in 2019 to 83% in 2023, and second-dose coverage fell from 86% to 76%. Some areas in Quebec and Alberta have even lower rates, creating gaps where the virus spreads easily.

Public health experts warn that the loss of measles elimination status damages Canada’s health reputation and highlights the need for stronger vaccination campaigns, better surveillance, and public trust in vaccines.

Measles is extremely contagious, and with the virus still circulating globally, experts stress that maintaining high vaccination coverage is essential to protect communities and restore Canada’s measles-free status.
