India Says Canada ‘Not Yet’ a Reliable Energy Partner, But Open to Future Trade

India’s new High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, has said that Canada is “not yet” a reliable source of conventional energy for India. His remarks come as both countries try to mend relations after last year’s diplomatic tensions involving Indian diplomats and Canadian authorities.

Patnaik explained that India is looking for dependable long-term energy partners and would consider Canada in the future if reliability improves. He stressed that economic ties should stay separate from political issues.

The relationship between India and Canada worsened after accusations linking Indian agents to the murder of a Sikh activist in British Columbia. This led to diplomatic expulsions and a pause in free trade talks.

Meanwhile, Canadian officials, including Energy Minister Tim Hodgson, have been promoting Canada as a trustworthy global energy supplier. Indian officials such as Anita Anand have also shown interest in Canadian energy as part of India’s wider energy strategy.

Both countries are now exploring the idea of a joint declaration that could serve as a first step toward rebuilding trust and possibly restarting free trade talks in the future.
