Canada’s inflation rate climbed to 2.4% in September, up from 1.9% in August. The increase was mainly due to higher food prices, with grocery costs rising by about 4% compared to last year. Items like fresh vegetables, beef, coffee, sugar, and sweets became notably more expensive because of limited supply.

On the bright side, falling gasoline prices helped keep inflation from rising even further. When excluding the more volatile energy prices, the core inflation rate stood at 2.8%.

The Bank of Canada uses inflation data, along with wholesale prices, economic growth (GDP), and employment numbers, to make decisions about interest rates. The next rate decision is expected on October 29.
