9.6 Quake Shakes Kamchatka, Tsunami Warnings Issued for Pacific Coasts

A powerful 9.6 magnitude earthquake struck near the Kamchatka region of Russia, about 410 km from the coast at a depth of nearly 10 km.

Authorities quickly issued tsunami warnings. The British Columbia Emergency Management Office noted possible threats to the Pacific Northwest, Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, and nearby U.S. and Canadian Pacific coasts. The U.S. National Weather Service in Alaska also issued alerts for surrounding areas.

The quake was followed by strong aftershocks, including an 8.8 magnitude tremor on July 29 near the Kamchatka Peninsula. Experts say this is part of a sequence of powerful quakes in the region, which is known for its history of major earthquakes and tsunamis.
