Statistics Canada has announced a multi-year workforce reduction that will result in about 850 job cuts over the next two years. The process began this week, with 100 employees receiving notices.

The remaining 750 positions are expected to be identified within the coming weeks. The cuts will affect employees at different levels, including management, with nearly 12% of executive roles likely to be impacted.

To reduce compulsory layoffs, the agency is encouraging voluntary departures and early retirement. However, it has confirmed that some staff may still receive layoff notices by the end of the month.

This decision is part of the federal government’s wider effort to scale back public sector staffing after the pandemic, aiming to cut around 28,000 jobs and save $6 billion by 2029.
