Sikh Student Barred from Durham College Convocation Over Kirpan Sparks Religious Rights Debate

A Sikh student, Harwinder Singh, was reportedly barred from attending his convocation ceremony at Durham College because he was wearing a kirpan. This small ceremonial sword holds deep religious significance in Sikhism.

The incident took place at the Tribute Communities Centre in Oshawa, where college and venue officials said Singh’s kirpan was too large—estimated between 18 and 24 inches—and therefore did not meet the safety policy. The college policy only allows kirpans that are under seven inches long and worn discreetly under clothing.

Singh argued that wearing the kirpan openly and of a traditional size is an important part of his faith and that being denied entry was discriminatory. The World Sikh Organisation (WSO) has filed a formal notice with Durham College, calling the decision a violation of religious freedom.

Durham College stated that it supports religious accommodations and has a clear kirpan policy, but did not comment on this particular case. Singh, who had graduated in June, said he still has not received his degree, even after four months.

The incident has sparked a wider discussion about how institutions balance safety rules with respect for religious practices, and whether policies should be reviewed to ensure they don’t unintentionally discriminate against faith-based expressions.
