Ottawa Pride Parade Cancelled After Protest Blockade, Festival Continues

Ottawa’s annual Pride parade came to an abrupt halt this weekend after protesters from Queers for Palestine blocked the route near Parliament Hill, calling for a town hall on boycott and sanctions against Israel. Organizers said they attempted to negotiate but, with no resolution in sight, made the difficult decision to cancel the march to avoid further conflict.

The cancellation impacted more than 7,000 participants from over 175 groups who had gathered to take part in the city’s largest Pride event. This year’s parade already carried tensions, following a pro-Palestinian statement earlier in the season that drew sharp criticism from sponsors, including the Jewish Federation of Ottawa.

Despite the disappointment, Capital Pride assured the community that the wider celebration is not over. The popular Bank Street festival and other Pride events will continue as scheduled. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and Pride leaders expressed regret over the disruption but emphasized that Ottawa will still celebrate the diversity, resilience, and voices of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.
