Nationwide Protests in Canada Demand Climate Action, Rights for Migrants and Indigenous Peoples

Thousands of people across Canada joined protests this weekend, with major rallies in Toronto and Ottawa, calling on the Liberal government to make climate action, Indigenous rights, migrant protections, and workers’ rights top priorities in the upcoming fall budget.

In Toronto, about 2,000 people marched as part of the country-wide “Draw the Line” protest. The demonstrations were organized by a coalition of 14 groups working on climate justice, migrant rights, Indigenous issues, and anti-war efforts.

Protesters criticized Prime Minister Mark Carney’s support for fossil fuel projects such as LNG pipelines and his push for higher military spending. They also raised concerns over new bills:

Bill C-5, which critics say could speed up large projects at the cost of Indigenous rights and environmental safeguards.
Bill C-2, which grants expanded border-security powers and is seen as harmful to migrants and refugees.

The rallies also showed international solidarity. Many participants demanded Canada impose an arms embargo on Israel and recognize Palestinian statehood.

In Ottawa, protesters painted a large mural on Wellington Street in front of Carney’s office before police intervened to clear the site.

Notable voices included Syed Hussan of the Migrant Rights Network and environmentalist David Suzuki, who stressed that climate change is the defining crisis of our time and needs urgent government action. Police later corrected reports about turnout, confirming that about 2,000 people joined in Toronto, not just “hundreds” as earlier stated.
