India, Canada Agree to Reset Ties with Focus on Security and Trust

India and Canada have decided to work together on a “new chapter” in their relationship, aiming to rebuild trust and strengthen cooperation after recent tensions.

In a key meeting, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Canada’s National Security Advisor Nathalie Drouin held wide-ranging talks. Both sides agreed to boost collaboration in fighting terrorism, tackling cross-border organized crime, and improving intelligence sharing.

The meeting also showed fresh political momentum, following earlier talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland’s envoy Rishi Carney. With new envoys appointed in both countries, the discussions signal a readiness to repair ties.

The two nations also agreed to reinforce existing frameworks of engagement and explore new ways to cooperate on security matters. Regional and global issues were also part of the dialogue.

The reset comes after months of strained relations linked to the Nijjar case and the diplomatic expulsions of 2023–24. Both governments now say they are committed to moving forward with a spirit of collaboration.
