Many People Now Crossing from U.S. to Canada to Seek Safety

A growing number of people are leaving the United States and entering Canada to ask for asylum. This increase is mainly because of stricter immigration rules in the U.S. under President Trump.

In just the first six days of July, more than 850 people crossed into Canada at the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle border. That’s over four times more than the same time last year.

Most of the people arriving are from Haiti and Venezuela. Others come from countries like Colombia, Pakistan, and several others.

In May, around 125 people were crossing the border every day. But now, the number is much higher.

Because the U.S. has become tougher on immigrants and increased deportations, many people feel unsafe and are turning to Canada for help.

This jump in numbers shows how changes in U.S. immigration policy are pushing more people to move north in search of safety and a better life.
