Hepatitis A threat on the Sunshine Coast

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) has issued a health alert after confirming a case of hepatitis A linked to Pepper Creek Pizza & Pasta in Sechelt, Sunshine Coast.

Health officials say that people who ate salads at the restaurant on July 31, August 14, August 23, or August 29 may have been exposed to the virus. Diners who only eat cooked food are not considered at risk.

Hepatitis A is a contagious liver infection. Symptoms can include tiredness, loss of appetite, stomach pain, fever, nausea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, and weight loss. The illness can last several weeks, but is preventable through vaccination.

VCH is encouraging anyone who ate the affected salads on the listed dates to get the hepatitis A vaccine as soon as possible. This can help prevent illness or reduce its severity.

The health authority stressed that this alert is precautionary and thanked the restaurant for cooperating fully. They also reminded the public that hepatitis A spreads through contaminated food or water, and vaccination is the best protection.
