Earthquake off BC’s Central Coast Near Bella Bella

A small earthquake shook off British Columbia’s central coast near Bella Bella on Sunday. The quake measured 4.8 magnitude and occurred about 10 kilometres deep under the ocean.

No damage was reported from the earthquake, and none is expected. Experts note that earthquakes with magnitudes below 5.4 are usually not strong enough to cause significant damage.

Authorities also confirmed that there is no tsunami risk for coastal BC. Environment and Natural Resources Canada said no tsunami warnings were issued after the quake.

Bella Bella, the closest community to the epicentre, is about 500 kilometres north of Vancouver.

The event was recorded by Earthquakes Canada and reported by several news outlets, including Global News. While this quake caused no harm, it once again raises the question of how prepared the region is for larger quakes and how well BC’s tsunami alert system works.
