Canada Rejects More Indian Student Visas Amid New Rules

Canada has sharply increased its rejection of study visa applications from Indian students. In August 2025, about 74% of Indian applications were refused, compared to 32% in August 2023. This means nearly three out of four Indian students who applied were denied.

The total number of Indian applicants also dropped from 20,900 in 2023 to just 4,515 in 2025. Overall, Canada rejected about 40% of all student visa applications this August, while only 24% of Chinese applicants were refused.

Officials say the new visa rules aim to stop fraudulent applications and ensure students can financially support their studies. The government has introduced stricter checks and higher financial proof requirements.

India has been Canada’s biggest source of international students for the last ten years, but the new policy marks a major shift. While Canada says it values Indian students, it also wants to protect the system’s integrity and prevent misuse of student visas.
