Canada Issues Advisory: ‘X’ Passport Holders May Face U.S. Travel Restrictions

Canada has updated its travel advisory for the United States, warning that people with passports showing the gender-neutral “X” marker may face problems when entering or transiting through the U.S. and some other countries.

The warning comes because not all countries recognize the “X” option on travel documents. Travelers are advised to check visa and entry rules with the embassy or consulate of their destination before leaving.

In recent years, the U.S. has had limited options for gender markers on official documents. The State Department has stopped issuing passports with an “X” marker and does not allow changes to gender markers on existing passports.

Canada also has restrictions. Its Nexus program, which speeds up border crossings, now requires applicants to choose either “male” or “female.” While people who got an “X” marker on their Nexus card before the new rules can still use it, new applicants no longer have this option.

Between January 2022 and March 2025, around 550 Nexus applications included the “X” marker.
