Canada Raises Financial Requirements for International Students from September 2025

International students planning to study in Canada will soon need to show more funds before they can get a study permit. The new rules from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will take effect on September 1, 2025.

For a single applicant, the minimum proof of funds has been increased to CA $22,895, which is about CA $2,260 more than the current requirement. Students bringing their families will have to show higher amounts, depending on the family size. For example, a family of four must show CA $42,543, an increase of CA $4,197. Each additional family member adds CA $6,170 to the total.

IRCC has also shared a detailed table that explains the updated minimum fund requirements for families ranging from one to seven members, along with the extra amount needed for larger families.

Students who plan to study in Quebec will face slightly different rules. Quebec requires applicants to meet its own minimum fund levels and to provide proof of funds to both IRCC and Quebec’s immigration ministry (MIFI). These amounts vary—for instance, CA $7,756 is required for a single minor, while a four-person family must show at least CA $27,499.

To prove they have enough money, applicants can submit documents such as bank statements, Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs), loan papers, scholarship letters, or financial support letters. Some students may also need to follow country-specific financial rules, such as foreign exchange regulations.

The government says these changes are meant to make sure students can properly support themselves and their families during their stay in Canada. The new amounts reflect the rising cost of living in the country.
