Talks Resume as Alberta Teachers’ Strike Enters Second Week

After six days of closed classrooms, the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) and the provincial government are set to meet again to restart negotiations. The provincewide teachers’ strike has affected around 740,000 students in about 2,500 schools.

The ATA has now presented a new and more detailed proposal to the government, though the full details have not been shared publicly. The government’s bargaining team is expected to review the proposal after the long weekend.

The last offer from the government—which teachers rejected overwhelmingly—included a 12% salary increase over four years and the hiring of 3,000 new teachers to reduce class sizes.

The main points of disagreement remain teacher pay and hiring commitments, both seen as key to improving classroom conditions.

Classes will continue to be disrupted until an agreement is reached.
