Air India Flight AI171 Crashes in Ahmedabad: 290 Dead in India’s Deadliest Aviation Tragedy – Ex-CM Among Victims

Air India flight Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating as AI171 bound for London met with a fatal accident in Ahmedabad, a few minutes after takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. The death toll has risen to 290. The flight, carrying 242 passengers and 10 crew members, crashed into the BJ Medical College and Hospital, resulting in one of India’s worst aviation calamities.

Out of the 242 passengers, 169 were Indians, 53 were British nationals, seven were Portuguese, and one was Canadian. Former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, is one of the victims.

Soon after the crash, heavy smoke was visible from Dharpur, Ahmedabad. The emergency response team and the fire unit rushed to the spot immediately. The cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed his condolences and directed Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu to head to Ahmedabad to provide necessary assistance. PM Modi is anticipated to arrive at the accident site on Friday.

This catastrophic incident has sparked an outpouring of condolences from around the world, including the High Commission of Canada in India. Canada PM Mark Carney posted on X that he was “devastated to learn of the crash of a London-bound Air India plane in Ahmedabad, carrying 242 passengers — including one Canadian. My thoughts are with the loved ones of everyone on board.”

UK PM, Keir Starmer, also reacted to the news through X. He described the incident as devastating. Consequently, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch of the UK has offered assistance. The EU Embassy in India lowered the flag to honour the victims.

The Tata Group’s CEO, Campbell Willson, expressed his sadness and confirmed that the team is working hard to support the passengers, crew, their families, and the investigators. N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, has announced that the Tata group will provide Rs. 1 crore to the families of the victims of the accident.
