Air Canada Strike Declared Illegal, Dispute Escalates

The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has ruled that the ongoing strike by Air Canada’s 10,000 flight attendants is unlawful. The Board ordered CUPE, the union representing the workers, to tell its members to stop strike action and return to work immediately.

Air Canada welcomed the decision, saying it would help restart operations and warning that flights would remain cancelled if the order was ignored. The strike has already caused major disruptions, with around 940 flights cancelled and roughly 240 cancellations on Sunday alone.

CUPE, however, insists the conflict is not over. The union has vowed to continue fighting despite the CIRB’s ruling, raising the possibility of more legal battles.

The federal government has stepped in, moving to impose binding arbitration under Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code. This means the current collective agreement will be extended until a neutral arbitrator decides on a new deal.

Labour groups, including the Canadian Labour Congress, criticized the government’s move as an attack on workers’ rights and promised to stand with the flight attendants.

For passengers, the dispute has created widespread travel chaos, with no clear timeline yet for when normal flight schedules will fully resume.
