Air Canada Flight Attendants Strike, Thousands of Passengers Affected

More than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), have gone on strike after failing to reach a last-minute deal with the airline. The walkout has forced Air Canada to cancel all of its mainline and Rouge flights, disrupting travel for about 130,000 passengers each day. Flights operated by Air Canada Express, including Jazz and PAL, are not affected.

The dispute centres on wages, fair pay for all hours worked, and compensation for safety-related duties, as well as the need for improved rest and a better work-life balance. The union has accused Air Canada of not bargaining in good faith and says it does not support resolving the conflict through arbitration.

Air Canada, however, insists it has made a strong offer. The airline says it has proposed a 38 percent increase in total compensation over four years, along with improved health benefits and pensions, more paid vacation, and measures to improve rest periods. According to the company, flight attendants already earn more than their competitors and would become among the best paid in Canada under this deal.

The strike has already caused significant disruption, with more than 600 flights cancelled in recent days. Passengers are being offered refunds, travel credits, or the option to rebook their journeys. Authorities are advising people not to travel to airports unless they have confirmed tickets with other carriers.

Air Canada has asked the federal government to intervene under Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code, but it is still unclear whether Ottawa will step in. For now, the strike continues, leaving travelers facing uncertainty and long delays.
