Nearly 20,000 Indian students who received study permits for Canada were reported as “no-shows” by colleges during March and April 2024. In simple terms, these students arrived in the country but never enrolled in the institutions they were supposed to join.

The data comes from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), which has now begun taking a closer look at the situation. Officials say such a large number of students not turning up within such a short period is unusual and concerning.

In India, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched an investigation, looking at possible human trafficking links. According to initial findings, two Mumbai-based firms may have been sending thousands of students to Canada each year by helping them obtain study visas. There is also suspicion that some students may have used Canada as a stopover and later tried to enter the United States instead of attending college.

At the same time, IRCC has found over 10,000 fake college acceptance letters during document checks. Reports suggest that most of these were linked to students from Gujarat and Punjab. Many students are believed to have paid large amounts of money to agents in exchange for these documents.

Meanwhile, Canada’s federal police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), has contacted Indian authorities for more information as the investigation continues.

Officials in both countries have stressed that the allegations are still being examined and nothing has been proven in court yet. No colleges have been officially named so far.

The case has raised serious concerns about misuse of the student visa system and the role of middlemen. As the investigation moves forward, stricter checks and stronger action against fraud networks are likely.
