പുതുക്കിയ പങ്കാളിത്തത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഫലങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് 2.6 ബില്യൺ കനേഡിയൻ ഡോളറിന്റെ യുറേനിയം വിതരണ കരാർ. കരാർ പ്രകാരം, ആണവോർജ്ജ ഉൽപാദനത്തെ പിന്തുണയ്ക്കുന്നതിനായി കാനഡ ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്ക് യുറേനിയം നൽകും.

2023-ൽ സിഖ് ആക്ടിവിസ്റ്റ് ഹർദീപ് സിംഗ് നിജ്ജാറിന്റെ കൊലപാതകത്തിൽ ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്ക് പങ്കുണ്ടെന്ന് മുൻ കാനഡ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ജസ്റ്റിൻ ട്രൂഡോ ആരോപിച്ചതിനെത്തുടർന്ന് ഇരു രാജ്യങ്ങളും തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധം വഷളായിരുന്നു. ആരോപണങ്ങൾ ഇന്ത്യ ശക്തമായി നിഷേധിക്കുകയും കാനഡ തീവ്രവാദ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ അനുവദിക്കുകയാണെന്ന് ആരോപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

India–Canada Relations Enter New Era; Target Set for $50 Billion Trade by 2030

Relations between India and Canada are moving towards a fresh start after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited India in February 2026. The visit, the first by a Canadian Prime Minister in eight years, is being seen as a major step in repairing ties between the two countries after tensions in 2023.

India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said both countries are now working on a complete reset of relations. As part of this effort, India sent its biggest-ever business delegation to Canada, with more than 100 senior representatives from sectors including energy, mining, automobiles and aerospace.

One of the biggest outcomes of the renewed partnership is a uranium supply agreement worth 2.6 billion Canadian dollars. Under the deal, Canada will supply uranium to India to support nuclear energy production.

India and Canada have also restarted talks on a free-trade agreement, which had been paused in 2023. Both sides aim to complete the agreement before the end of 2026 and increase bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030.

Relations between the two countries had worsened after former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged Indian involvement in the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India strongly denied the allegations and accused Canada of allowing extremist activities.

Experts say the renewed partnership could open new opportunities in trade, energy, technology and investment for both nations.
