Health Officials Trace Deadly Legionnaires’ Outbreak to London Meat Plant

Health officials in London, Ontario, say they have identified the source of a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak that caused several deaths and hospitalisations this summer. The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) confirmed that Sofina Foods Inc., a meat-processing plant in east London, is the likely source.

The investigation focused on cooling towers, which are part of the plant’s HVAC system. Tests showed live Legionella bacteria in several towers across the city, but the strain found in Sofina’s towers matched the one that caused the outbreak.

Officials explained that they worked with operators at nine different sites and carried out extensive environmental testing before tracing the outbreak back to Sofina. They also noted that while the outbreak was initially declared over in early August, it had to be redeclared when 25 new cases were reported.

Sofina Foods had already carried out cleaning and disinfection of its cooling towers, but health experts believe the bacteria regrew during hot weather. This is not the first time the plant has been linked to such an outbreak — a similar incident happened last year, with the same type of bacteria detected.

Legionnaires’ disease develops within 2 to 10 days of exposure, so more cases could still appear. Authorities said they decided to publicly name Sofina Foods to be transparent and reassure residents.

In a statement, Sofina said it is committed to public safety and is continuing to work with the MLHU. The company added that it has followed all recommendations and will keep testing and treating its systems to prevent future problems.
