Canada’s immigration system is facing more delays as the backlog of applications grew by 5% in just one month, reaching 842,800 pending cases by June 30.

This backlog affects permanent residence, temporary permits, and citizenship applications, totalling over 2.1 million pending cases.

Permanent residence applications are among the most delayed. Out of 896,100 applications, 480,300 were processed on time, but 415,800 remain pending. Temporary permits, such as work, study, and visitor visas, make up the largest share, with over 1 million applications. About 64% were processed, but 379,600 are still stuck. Citizenship applications continue to face delays as well, with about 19% still in backlog, similar to previous months.

To handle the growing numbers, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is using advanced analytics and automation to speed up processing and prioritize complex cases.
