Power Cuts and School Closures as Winter Storm Disrupts the Maritimes

A strong winter storm swept through Canada’s Maritime provinces overnight, bringing heavy, wet snow and causing widespread disruption to daily life.

In Nova Scotia, the storm knocked out power to more than 120,000 homes and businesses. Strong winds and snowfall damaged power lines, and repair crews were sent out, though restoration work was slow in many areas.

Schools and government offices were closed or delayed across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Several hospitals and clinics also cancelled or postponed non-emergency services because travel conditions were unsafe.

According to Environment Canada, parts of central, eastern, and northern Nova Scotia received 15 to 20 centimetres of snow. Roads became slippery, leading to several vehicle accidents. Some highways in Cumberland and Colchester counties were temporarily closed due to poor driving conditions. Authorities advised people to avoid unnecessary travel.

Residents were also warned to be careful while shovelling snow and to take regular breaks to avoid exhaustion or injury.

As the storm moved east, Newfoundland prepared for similar conditions, with forecasts predicting 15 to 25 centimetres of snow and strong winds that could reduce visibility.

The storm caused major challenges for transportation, services, and daily planning, highlighting the impact of severe winter weather on the region.
