Tariffs Put Canadian Small Businesses at Risk, CFIB Warns

Canadian small businesses are facing mounting financial pressure as U.S.-imposed tariffs continue to drive up costs, with many warnings that they may not be able to withstand the impact for long.

A new report from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) highlights the growing strain on entrepreneurs. The survey found that nearly 19 per cent of small businesses would be unable to survive more than six months under current tariff conditions, while 38 per cent said they could not last beyond a year.

In addition to rising costs, 41 per cent of firms reported supply chain disruptions, further complicating operations. As a result, 36 per cent have been forced to delay or halt planned investments.

Business owners say they are doing their best to absorb the additional expenses, but many are now being pushed to make difficult decisions, including scaling back operations or closing altogether.

CFIB cautioned that if tariffs remain in place, the economic stability of Canada’s small business sector could be at risk in the months ahead.
