RBC Staffer Accused of Stealing from VIP Accounts

A former employee of the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) has been charged with fraud, identity theft, and unauthorized computer use. The accused allegedly accessed the bank accounts of high-profile individuals, including Prime Minister Mark Carney and a banking profile believed to belong to Justin Trudeau.

According to authorities, the former employee was recruited through the messaging app Telegram by someone using the name “AI WORLD.” He was reportedly paid about C$500 for each account he accessed, earning around C$5,000 in total, and also used the accounts for card-related fraud.

Much of the illegal activity took place at an RBC branch near Parliament Hill and was captured on CCTV cameras. Authorities have confirmed that there was no threat to the safety of the individuals involved or to national security.

RBC has stated that it discovered the unauthorized access, immediately ended the employee’s work, and reported the matter to the authorities.

This case highlights growing concerns about privacy and security in banking, especially as AI and digital tools are increasingly used in fraud schemes.
