Montreal’s LaSalle College Fined $30 Million for Breaking Student Limits

Montreal’s LaSalle College is facing a huge $30 million fine from the Quebec government for allowing too many students into its English programs. The fine is for not following the new rules introduced in 2022 that limit how many students can be admitted into English-language courses.

LaSalle College is a bilingual (English and French) private school that’s been around for 65 years. It says this fine could force it to shut down. The college argues that it had already accepted many international students before the new rules were made, so it was hard to stay within the new limits.

According to the government, LaSalle was the only private college receiving public funding that broke the law. The college now says it will follow all the rules by the end of this year. It has also gone to court to try and cancel the fine.
