Jet Fuel Crisis Disrupts Air India’s Canada Operations

Air India has sharply reduced its flight services between Canada and India from April to July following a major rise in global jet fuel prices. The airline says increasing operational costs and longer flight routes caused by international airspace closures have made several routes less profitable.

The biggest reduction has been seen on the Toronto–Delhi route. In March, the airline operated 48 round-trip flights between the two cities, but this dropped to 31 flights in May — a decline of nearly 35 percent. Flights between Delhi and Vancouver have also been reduced from seven services per week to five, with more schedule cuts expected in June and July.

According to Air India CEO Campbell Wilson, soaring fuel prices are the main reason behind the changes. The situation worsened after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a major global oil shipping route, which disrupted energy exports from the Persian Gulf and pushed fuel prices to almost double their earlier levels.

Because of the higher operating costs, Air India has increased ticket prices and added fuel surcharges on many routes. However, the higher fares have also affected passenger demand. Reports show that average round-trip economy fares between Canada and Delhi rose by around 24 percent year-over-year, reaching nearly 1,963 Canadian dollars by late April.

The impact is being strongly felt by the nearly 1.4 million Canadians of Indian origin, many of whom travel regularly between the two countries for family visits, business, education, and tourism. Travelers are now facing fewer flight options, higher ticket prices, and longer waiting times during peak travel periods.

Other Canadian airlines are also making adjustments. Air Canada has reportedly paused some seasonal routes, while WestJet is reducing its flight capacity by nearly six percent in June due to similar fuel-related pressures.

Industry experts warn that if fuel prices remain high and international route restrictions continue, travelers between Canada and India could continue facing expensive fares and reduced connectivity throughout the summer season.
