Indian Gangsters Using Canada as Safe Haven

A recent report by Newsweek has revealed that several fugitives wanted in India for serious crimes, including murder and drug trafficking, are using student visas, asylum claims, and illegal immigration routes to settle in the United States and Canada.

According to the report, these individuals have been rebuilding their criminal networks from abroad and are allegedly directing criminal activities in India while staying out of reach of law enforcement agencies.

Former US Department of Homeland Security officials said that many of these fugitives initially used North America as a safe base to target victims in India. Over time, some criminal groups expanded their operations and began targeting business owners in North America as well.

Authorities in India, the US, and Canada now consider these groups to be transnational criminal organizations. Investigators say the gangs increasingly use encrypted messaging applications and cryptocurrency to hide their activities and maintain distance from operations on the ground.

A police official from Haryana described the system as a “hybrid model,” where gang leaders operate from overseas while local associates carry out crimes.

The report also notes a shift in criminal activities, with some networks moving beyond extortion and contract killings into drug trafficking, including fentanyl distribution. Officials say younger recruits are increasingly being drawn into these operations.

India has repeatedly sought the extradition of several wanted individuals. However, legal procedures, asylum protections, and lengthy court processes in foreign countries have often delayed action.

US authorities have acknowledged stronger cooperation with Indian agencies but noted that legal requirements and due process can slow down extradition efforts.

Law enforcement agencies continue to monitor the growing threat posed by these international criminal networks.
