Alberta Independence Referendum Proposal Moves Forward

Alberta’s election authority has approved a proposed referendum question that asks whether the province should separate from Canada and become an independent country.

This approval allows supporters to begin a signature collection campaign. The group has four months to collect nearly 178,000 signatures. If they succeed, the question will be put to Alberta voters in a province-wide referendum.

The petition is being led by Mitch Sylvestre of the Alberta Prosperity Project, a group that supports Alberta’s independence. The movement has links to Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party (UCP). Supporters have called the approval a major win and say signature collection will start soon.

Earlier, a similar referendum question faced a court review over whether it was constitutional. However, recent changes to Alberta’s referendum rules, introduced by the provincial government, removed that legal hurdle and made the current process possible.

If enough signatures are gathered, Albertans will eventually decide the issue through a public vote.
