Bank of Canada Cuts Rates Again as Trade Tensions Slow Growth

The Bank of Canada has lowered its main interest rate to 2.25%, cutting it by 0.25 percentage points. This is the fourth rate cut in 2025, continuing its effort to support the slowing economy.

Officials said the decision was influenced by uncertainty over U.S. tariffs and global trade tensions, which have weakened Canada’s exports and business investment. The economy shrank by 1.6% in the second quarter of the year.

The Bank now expects only slow growth ahead — about 1.2% in 2025, 1.1% in 2026, and 1.6% in 2027. It also warned that future conditions could change depending on how global trade policies evolve.

Despite recent challenges, the Bank does not expect a deep recession or a big rise in unemployment, describing Canada’s economic outlook as “cautiously optimistic.”
