Wave of Doctor Resignations Pushes B.C.’s Interior Health to the Brink

The Interior Health region of British Columbia is facing a serious shortage of doctors after several recent resignations. Seven obstetricians and gynaecologists have left Royal Inland Hospital, and four psychiatrists have resigned from Jubilee Hospital. These departures have made it harder for patients to get care and added pressure on already busy hospitals.

Other hospitals are also feeling the strain — Kelowna General Hospital’s pediatric unit recently had to close temporarily due to a lack of doctors.

Lawyer Sonia Nijjar said the health system is “falling apart” and urged the public to speak up and demand better care.

Health Minister Josie Osborne said she is confident in the new leadership of Interior Health under President and CEO Sylvia Weir. She added that recruitment efforts are ongoing, with several new doctors already signing contracts — four psychiatrists and three obstetricians are expected to join soon. Officials say this crisis is part of a larger problem affecting hospitals across Canada, where heavy workloads and burnout are causing more doctors to quit. They encourage the public to advocate for themselves and help family and friends navigate the struggling system.
