Richmond Land Shock: Aboriginal Title Ruling Sparks Property Ownership Fears

Landowners in Richmond, British Columbia, were recently sent a notice saying their properties might be affected by a court ruling that granted Aboriginal title to the Cowichan Tribes.

The notice, signed by the city’s mayor, warned that some land titles in the area could be invalid or uncertain because of the decision. It also invited property owners to attend an information meeting to understand the situation better.

The court ruling, issued in August, stated that the Crown’s ownership of certain lands in Richmond was invalid and must be resolved through negotiation, legal action, or purchase. Critics, however, questioned why the mayor sent out the notice before the legal process and possible appeals were finished.

The Cowichan Tribes, a large Coast Salish First Nation from Vancouver Island, have long-standing territorial claims in the region.

BC Attorney General Niki Sharma said the decision could have wide-reaching and unintended effects on private property rights across the province.

The situation has raised major concerns among residents and property experts about how Aboriginal title claims may impact private land ownership in British Columbia.
