Parents Worried About School Zone Safety, Survey Shows

A new Canadian survey has found that many parents are worried about their children’s safety in school zones as classes reopen.

According to the survey, 63% of parents believe school zones are not safe. A large majority, approximately 83%, report that speeding vehicles and dangerous parking are the most significant issues near schools. Many also feel that traffic around schools has become worse compared to previous years.

In Scarborough, parents report that drivers often cut across roads near schools, putting children at risk. A recent incident involving a child has added to the growing concern.

Local authorities have already taken some steps. The speed limit on Kingston Road has been reduced to improve safety. At the same time, parents and safety groups are calling for even stricter rules, including 30 km/h speed zones around schools.

The survey also shows that about half of parents’ support lowering the speed limit near schools to 30 km/h, believing it would help protect children and make school zones safer.
