First-Ever Andes Hantavirus Case in Canada Sparks Health Monitoring

Canada has confirmed its first case of the rare Andes hantavirus, a strain that is different from most hantaviruses because it can spread from one person to another. The patient is a resident of Yukon who had been isolating in British Columbia after being exposed during an Antarctic cruise trip.

The individual developed mild symptoms, including fever and headache, and was later moved to a hospital in Victoria for medical evaluation. Health officials say the patient is stable and the overall risk to the public remains low.

So far, no additional cases have been identified. Nine Canadians considered high-risk contacts are currently isolating and being closely monitored in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia.

Health authorities also investigated a laboratory safety issue involving a blood sample at Royal Jubilee Hospital. Officials confirmed there was no danger to staff because hantavirus does not spread through blood exposure.

In addition, 27 people who shared flights with a confirmed case are being monitored for symptoms, although officials say they are not considered close contacts.
