When Winter Struck Hard: Toronto’s Snowstorm Breaks All Records

Toronto saw an intense winter storm that set a new snowfall record at Pearson International Airport. In just one day, 46 cm of snow fell, breaking the previous record of 36.8 cm set in 1966.

According to Environment Canada, January’s total snowfall has reached 88.2 cm, making it the snowiest January—and the snowiest month—since records began in 1937.

Downtown Toronto was hit especially hard due to lake-effect snow from Lake Ontario, with some areas receiving around 56 cm in a single day. Snow fell continuously through Sunday, and near the lake, it piled up at a rapid rate of 8–9 cm per hour.

Meteorologists said the storm became stronger when very cold Arctic air mixed with warm, moist air, leading to heavier snowfall. The extremely cold temperatures, between –9°C and –12°C, caused more snow to form from the same amount of moisture.

The storm caused major disruptions across the city. Several schools were closed, public transport including subway services was affected, and road conditions remained difficult as crews worked to clear the record-breaking snowfall.
