Snow Squall Watch Issued for Parts of Southern Ontario

Environment Canada has issued a snow squall watch for several parts of southern Ontario, warning of hazardous travel conditions due to lake-effect snow squalls expected on Friday and Friday night.

Meteorologists say localized snowfall of 10 to 20 centimetres is possible, particularly in areas east of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, including Goderich, the Bruce Peninsula, Owen Sound, Barrie, and Orillia.

Officials stress that the primary risk is sharply reduced visibility, not just snowfall amounts. Heavy, blowing snow combined with strong winds may cause visibility to drop to near-zero levels at times, creating dangerous driving conditions.

Forecasters note that winds shifting from west to northwest may cause snow squalls to move quickly, leading to rapidly changing weather conditions over short distances.

In addition to the snow squall watch, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for much of southern Ontario, cautioning residents about rapidly falling temperatures and strong winds on Friday.

Drivers and residents are urged to exercise caution, stay updated on weather alerts, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense snowfall.
