National School Food Program Expands to Support More Saskatchewan Students

Saskatchewan and federal authorities have announced a major expansion of the National School Food Program, aiming to provide free, healthy meals to more students across the province. The move comes as schools face rising food costs and growing demand for nutrition support.

Under a new three-year contract worth 1.58 billion CAD, the program will begin rolling out this year for the 2025–26 school year. Saskatchewan will receive 64 million CAD, which will be used to serve students in 30 public schools selected based on community need.

Officials say the program will make a big difference in classrooms. Schools that already provide meals have seen better attendance, improved student behaviour, and more focus during lessons. Providing the same meals to all students is also expected to boost equity and reduce stigma.

Across Canada, the expanded program is expected to serve up to 400,000 meals every year, giving more children access to the nutrition they need to learn and grow.
