Hurricane Melissa Races North: Eastern Canada Braces for Wind and Rain

Hurricane Melissa is moving north from the Caribbean toward Eastern Canada, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. The storm is expected to pass west of Bermuda and then skim Newfoundland before heading into the cold North Atlantic.

Although Melissa has weakened in wind strength, it continues to cause severe weather in several regions. Heavy rain has drenched Cuba and the Bahamas, with some areas in Jamaica and eastern Cuba recording up to 100 cm of rainfall. Flooding in Haiti has led to several deaths, and mudslides remain a danger due to ongoing rain.

As the storm moves north, it is expected to speed up, which means each area will experience the worst weather for a shorter time.

Eastern Canada, especially eastern Newfoundland, should prepare for winds of 60–80 km/h and 25–50 mm of rain as Melissa passes close by. After brushing Atlantic Canada, the storm will weaken further as it moves into colder waters.
