India and Canada Appoint New High Commissioners to Restore Ties

India and Canada have announced the appointment of new high commissioners in each other’s capitals, a move seen as an important step to repair strained relations.

India has named Dinesh K. Patnaik as its new High Commissioner to Canada, a senior diplomat with over three decades of experience. Patnaikini, who is currently serving as India’s ambassador to Spain, is expected to take charge soon.

Canada, meanwhile, has appointed Christopher Coutter, a career diplomat with 35 years of service, as its new High Commissioner to India.

Relations between the two countries had soured since June 2023, following the controversy over the killing of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Both nations had expelled senior diplomats at the time, leading to a freeze in engagement.

With these new appointments, both India and Canada are signaling their intention to restore normal diplomatic ties and work together on strengthening cooperation step by step.
