72 Canadians Fall Ill After Eating Popular Salami

A salmonella outbreak in Canada has made 72 people sick after they ate certain types of salami. The affected products are Rea brand Genoa Salami and Bona brand Mild Genoa Salami. This has led to a nationwide recall of these items to keep people safe.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has recalled the salami in Alberta, Ontario, and Manitoba, where most cases were reported. Alberta had the highest number of cases, followed by Ontario and Manitoba.

The illnesses mainly happened between mid-April and mid-June, and many people got sick after eating ready-to-eat sandwiches or buying meat from deli counters. So far, seven people have been hospitalized due to the infection.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious illness, especially in children, elderly people, pregnant women, and those with weak immune systems. Symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhoea. In some cases, people may not show symptoms, but the infection can still cause long-term health problems.

Health officials are reminding everyone to be careful when handling and eating ready-to-eat meat products. Always check food recalls and store and prepare deli meats safely.
