Canada Slashes Immigration Backlog to 6-Month Low

Ottawa: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to make steady progress in reducing its application backlog, marking the fifth consecutive month with figures below the one million mark. As of April 30, 2025, the total number of backlogged applications stood at 760,200, reflecting a 2.53% drop from 779,900 recorded at the end of March.

This marks the lowest backlog in six months, offering a positive signal for applicants across all immigration categories.

IRCC’s permanent residence (PR) inventory, which includes programs such as Express Entry, the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), and family sponsorship, reached 880,800 applications as of April 30. Among these, 489,800 applications (56%) were processed within the department’s official service standards. The remaining 391,000 applications (44%) were categorised as backlogged.

Compared to March, the PR inventory has grown by 28,100 applications, highlighting sustained demand despite ongoing processing efforts.

Temporary residency (TR) applications—including work permits, study permits, and visitor visas—totalled 918,500 by the end of April. IRCC managed to process 65% of these applications within service timelines, leaving a backlog of 324,300 applications.

Canadian citizenship grant applications remain the most efficiently processed of all categories. As of April 30, the IRCC had 242,500 citizenship applications in its system, with 81% processed within service standards. Just 44,900 applications (19%) were considered backlogged, consistent with low backlog trends observed in recent months.

IRCC is reducing its backlog and improving processing times, indicating progress in streamlining immigration. Although there are still challenges, especially with temporary residency, efficiency is expected to increase.
