റിസർവ് ബാങ്ക് ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ നടത്തിയ റെമിറ്റൻസ് സർവേ പ്രകാരം, 2023-24 കാലയളവിൽ ഇന്ത്യയിലെത്തിയ 118.7 ബില്യൺ ഡോളർ റെമിറ്റൻസുകളിൽ ഏകദേശം 32 ബില്യൺ ഡോളർ അമേരിക്കയിൽ നിന്നാണ്. ഈ കണക്ക് അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയാൽ, പ്രവാസി ഇന്ത്യക്കാർക്ക് ഏകദേശം 1.6 ബില്യൺ ഡോളർ അധിക നികുതിയായി നൽകേണ്ടിവരുമെന്ന് വിലയിരുത്തുന്നു.

The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” proposed by US President Donald Trump was passed by the US House Budget Committee late Sunday night by a vote of 17-16. This could put a huge financial burden on Indian immigrants living in the US, especially Malayalis.
According to the new bill, all remittances sent abroad by non-US citizens—such as those holding H-1B visas and green cards—will be taxed at 5 percent. Since there is no cap on the tax exemptions, even small transfers will be affected.
According to the detailed financial provisions of the 1,116-page bill, this tax will be exempted only if the sender is a US citizen. Thus, the expatriate community, which includes about 3.2 million Indians in India, will be equally affected by this tax.
According to the Remittance Survey conducted by the Reserve Bank of India, out of the $118.7 billion in remittances to India in 2023-24, about $32 billion came from the United States. Based on this figure, it is estimated that NRIs will have to pay about $1.6 billion in additional taxes.
This tax will be applicable not only on remittances to India, but also on investment income and share trading. For many Malayali families, financial assistance to the country is essential for living expenses. Therefore, experts are of the opinion that the new tax rate will hit those families well and will kill their financial security.
The bill also provides funding for other crucial aspects of Trump’s immigration policies. For example, it includes $46.5 billion for the reconstruction of the wall on the Mexico border and funds for 10,000 additional ICE officers for deportation processes. The bill also includes a proposal to impose a $1,000 fee on asylum seekers.
The bill aims to deport a total of 1 million immigrants a year and house 100,000 in detention centers. On Friday, some members of the Budget Committee voiced opposition to the bill, criticizing its tough immigration stance, but on Sunday the bill moved to the next stage.
