Join or Pay: Trump’s $61B Golden Dome Deal Sparks Canadian Outrage

Former U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, in a post on Truth Social, that Canada would have to pay US$61 billion to join the U.S. missile defense system called the “Golden Dome.” But, he added, if Canada agrees to become the 51st state of the U.S., it would cost them nothing.

Trump also claimed that Canada had shown interest in joining the Golden Dome.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made it clear that Canada is a sovereign and independent country and will stay that way. His office also said that they have clearly told Trump this in every discussion.

To further show Canada’s stand, King Charles III, who is also Canada’s monarch, spoke in the Canadian Parliament for the first time in nearly 50 years. In his speech, he also stressed Canada’s independence.

This was a clear message to Trump: Canada already has a King, its own history, a Parliament, and a national anthem. It has no plans to become part of the United States.
